Non-profit organizations in the U.S. collect billions of dollars in donations every year. Every non-profit serves a purpose. Some use their money for scientific research, and others provide public services or disaster relief. All of them operate on donations of some sort, and the more money they gather, the more good they can do. Six of the top non-profit organizations in the U.S. have raised over a billion dollars each.o

United Way Worldwide

The United Way collected nearly $4 billion in donations to help people lead more productive lives. They provide resources like career training, credit counseling, and educational services. The United Way is the largest charity according to the number of funds it received, and it supports many other charities.

Feeding America

Feeding America raised nearly $3 billion. It is a charity made to relieve people of their hunger, networking with over 200 food banks to do so.

American Red Cross

The American Red Cross received $3.6 billion in donations, and the charity uses its funds to save lives and improve the quality of life. They give disaster relief, like food, water, and shelter, to those undergoing a natural disaster. It is one of the largest disaster relief providers within the non-profit sector. The American Red Cross also helps support military families.

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is a Christian charity that raked in $3.9 billion in donations last year. Their mission is to spread the teachings of Jesus Christ, but the Salvation Army also provides aid to anyone in need. They provide public services, like feeding the people who have trouble getting a hot meal and providing shelter for those who need it. The Salvation Army also offers adult rehabilitation services.

Habitat for Humanity International

Habitat for Humanity raised over $2 billion. This charity started as a Christian housing ministry. Volunteers help to build homes for people who need housing.

St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital

St. Jude’s raised $2.3 billion for medical research. As the name suggests, it is a pediatric treatment facility. Their focus is on children’s catastrophic diseases.

Direct Relief

Direct Relief received over $1 billion in donations, and they use that money to provide local healthcare providers with medicine and medical supplies. They do this for over 140 countries.
